The South African Association for Laboratory Animal Science (SAALAS) NPC is delighted to invite you to the SAALAS 2025 Well-being Conference, taking place from 5–7 May 2025, at 26D South, Muldersdrift, South Africa.

The call for abstracts for presenting at the SAALAS 2025 Well-being conference is now open. Participants interested in presenting oral or poster presentations are invited to submit an abstract. All abstracts will undergo peer review.
The deadline for abstract submission is 15 January 2025.
Abstracts for poster sessions or oral presentations in the following key areas of focus are welcome:
* The mental & emotional well-being of the staff (including mental resiliency, wellness themes, transparency in research, designing of experiments, competency, management practices)
* Practical methods for implementing the 4R’s in facilities – ideas from the field and new insights from international sources.
* Increasing and promoting animal well-being – are we doing enough?
* Ethical insights in animal research (this can include harms-benefit assessments)
* Legal aspects of research involving animals in South Africa including insights into the recently published guidance documents in SA
Other topics are welcome, however preference will be given to presentations in key areas of focus
Abstract guidelines
Oral presentation information
Oral presentations will have 15 to 20 minute time slots. The conference organisers will group oral presentations by theme into sessions that will include time for questions from the audience.
This conference follows the biomedical convention, in that presenters typically use PowerPoint or other slide presentations. Should you wish to present in another way please indicate this.
Presenting authors are responsible for registration, travel, and accommodation costs.
Abstracts will be compiled and made available to participants and published electronically.
Authors should also be present when the awards are issued at the closing ceremony.
Any presenter who is unable to attend should arrange for another qualified individual to present the paper in question.
Poster session information
- Authors whose abstract is approved are kindly requested to print the poster size 80 cm wide x 110 cm high (i.e., portrait). You will be notified of the time slot and location to present your posters. Material to attach your poster to the panel will be provided.
- It is highly recommended to have A4 size printouts of your poster available for attendees to take home.
- Authors are expected to be available during the poster session.
- Authors should also be present when the awards are issued at the closing ceremony.

Abstract submission guidelines
- We kindly request you to follow the following guidelines for your abstract submission:
- There is no limit to the number of abstracts you may submit.
- Research work should be original and of a high standard – in order to evaluate this standard the applicants are required to complete the ARRIVE Guidelines checklist and provide evidence of scientific review. Please review the ARRIVE guidelines (https://arriveguidelines.org/arrive-guidelines) to ensure all the elements are included in the study design and reporting of your work. - All work that utilised animals must have an animal ethics committee approval certificate attached to the application. Please indicate any registrations the ethics committee may have.
- Work presented previously is allowed but MUST include new information that will be presented for the first time at the conference.
- Abstracts will be accepted in ENGLISH only.

- Biography of no more than 250 words that can be published in abstract book
- Photograph of the presenting author (and your permission to use the photo in abstract book).
- The completed ARRIVE checklist.
- Ethics approval certificate (where applicable).
Abstracts will be reviewed by members of the scientific committee; acceptance notifications will be communicated by the conference organiser. The outcome of the review will be on scientific quality and relevance, assignment to a key area of focus, and whether it is a poster or oral presentation.

Dr. Megan LaFollette
Dr. Megan LaFollette is Executive Director at The 3Rs Collaborative where she works to advance better science for both people and animals. She has her PhD in Animal Behavior & Well-Being from Purdue University, where she also received a Master of Science in Animal Welfare. She previously sat on the council of the International Society for Applied Ethology and currently sits on the Steering Committee for Human-Animal Interaction for AVMA. Her expertise includes animal welfare generally and the practical implementation of rat tickling, compassion fatigue resiliency, microphysiological systems, environmental health monitoring, and refined mouse handling. She is committed to advancing widespread implementation of practical, impactful, and evidence-based 3Rs techniques: refinement, reduction, and replacement.Barney Reed
Barney ReedSenior Science and Policy Manager
Animals in Science Department, RSPCA, UK
For twenty-five years, Barney has been engaged in a range of initiatives involving government, industry, academia and NGOs in the UK, EU and around the world aimed at promoting good standards of science, ethics and animal welfare. In particular, Barney works to support the fullest implementation of the 3Rs, effective regulation and processes of ethical review, and good cultures of care within institutions. He has served on the institutional Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Bodies (similar to AECs) of eight establishments across academia and industry, and been a member of various European Commission Expert Working Groups producing guidance to help Member States implement the European Union’s legislation governing the use of animals in science. Between 2016 and 2023, he was appointed to the UK national Animals in Science Committee – a statutory body set up to provide advice to the Secretary of State on matters relating to the use of animals in research and testing. In 2023 he was elected to the Governing Board of the International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS).
